전 전 장관은 이날 서울 서대문구 경찰청 청사 앞에서 기자들과 만나 “통일교로부터 그 어떤 불법적인 금품 수수가 없었다”며 혐의를 강력히 부인했다.이어 “최근 통일교 문제 때문에 세상이 시끄럽다.그 중심에 제가 서있다는 것만으로도 국민들께 대단히 죄송하다”고 덧붙였다.
그는 “한일해저터널에 대한 청탁 대가로 현금 2000만원과 시계 한 점을 받았다고 얘기하는데 명백히 사실이 아니다”며 “한일해저터널은 부산의 미래를 팔아먹는 것이고 일본이 전적으로 이익을 보는 구조”라고 말했다.그러면서 “(한일해저터널은) 제가 반대를 해왔던 것이고 이것은 저의 정치적 신념“이라고 강조했다.
전 전 장관은 “정치적 험지라고 하는 부산에서 세 번 떨어지고 네 번만에 당선이 됐다”며 “그런 제가 현금 2000만원과 시계 한 점으로 고단한 인내의 시간을 바꿨다는 게 말이 되나.차라리 현금 200억과 시계 100점이라고 해야 최소한의 개연성이라도 있을 것 아니겠느냐”고 밝혔다.
