존 루젠비크 영국 케임브리지대 심리학과 교수팀은 197개국 500개 이상의 온라인 플랫폼에서 SMS 인증 서비스 가격과 재고를 추적하는 무료 플랫폼‘케임브리지 온라인 신뢰 및 안전 지수(COTSI)’를 구축하고 연구 결과를 11일(현지 시간) 국제 학술지‘사이언스’에 공개했다.

연구팀은 전 세계 주요 SMS 인증 제공 업체 4곳의 접근 가능 데이터를 활용해 2024년 7월 25일부터 2025년 7월 27일까지 1년간 국가별 SMS 인증 비용과 재고 데이터를 분석하고 각국 경제·정치 지표와 연계했다.국가별 SMS 인증 가격,가격에 영향을 미치는 변수 등이 조사됐다.
분석에 따르면 SMS 인증 서비스를 제공하는 업체는 전 세계에 최소 17곳 이상이며 초국적으로 활동한다.주요 고객은 러시아어 사용자가 가장 많았고 중국어 사용자가 뒤를 이었다.

연구팀은 2024년 7월부터 2025년 6월 사이에 인구 100만 명 이상 국가에서 실시된 61개 선거를 대상으로 선거일 30일 전부터 선거일까지 주요 플랫폼 7곳에서 SMS 인증 가격과 수익성을 비교했다.그 결과 텔레그램의 SMS 인증 비용이 선거 전에 유의미하게 상승하는 경향이 확인됐다.정치적으로 민감한 시기에 영향력을 행사하기 위해 계정 생성 수요가 증가했을 것이라는 해석이다.
연구팀은 SIM 카드 대량 구매를 어렵게 하거나 SIM 카드 대량 등록 업체에 대한 규제를 강화하면 가짜 계정 생성을 막는 효과가 있을 것으로 예상했다.또 계정 등록 위치에 대한 투명성을 높이는 것이 대량의 가짜 계정 생성 억제에 효과적일 수 있다고 제안했다.연구팀은 “논문 발표 이후 SMS 인증 제공 업체들이 보안을 강화할 경우 연구가 복잡해질 수 있다”면서도 “우리의 연구가 온라인 플랫폼의 신뢰성과 안전성 제고를 위한 출발점이 될 것이라 믿는다”고 밝혔다.
