앞서 스칸디나비아에 위치한 덴마크와 스웨덴은 2009년 양국의 우정 서비스를 통합해 포스트노르드를 출범시켰다.
덴마크는 1624년부터 우체국을 통해 편지를 주고받아 왔지만 지난 25년간 편지 발송량이 90% 이상 감소한 것으로 알려졌다.
이번 편지 배달 종료 조치는 덴마크에만 적용되며,스웨덴에서는 기존과 같이 편지 서비스를 이용할 수 있다.
덴마크 우표는 환불 절차가 진행될 예정이다.

이에 따라 전국에 설치된 빨간 우체통의 수는 점진적으로 줄어들고 있으며 이용률이 낮은 지역의 우체통은 철거 또는 이전 설치가 이뤄지고 있다.
다만 농어촌·도서 지역과 고령층 이용을 고려해 완전한 폐지는 검토되지 않고 있다.
또 우정사업본부는 무인 우편 창구,모바일 우편 서비스,전자문서 기반 등기 서비스 등을 확대하며 디지털 전환을 추진 중이다.
