앞서 마두로 대통령은 지난 3일(현지시간) 카라카스에서 미군 특수부대에 의해 체포된 뒤 미국으로 압송됐다.그는 남부연방지방법원에서 마약 밀매 및 관련 혐의에 대한 절차적 심문을 받았다.
마두로 대통령과 부인 실리아 플로레스는 대규모 코카인 밀수 및 나르코테러 혐의로 기소된 상태다.검찰은 이들이 지난 수십 년간 마약 카르텔과 협력해 수t의 코카인을 미국으로 반입하는 데 관여했다고 보고 있다.유죄가 확정될 경우 두 사람 모두 종신형에 처해질 수 있다.
