테크인사이츠 "기린 9030,플레이앤고SMIC가 의미 있는 미세화 달성을 보여줘"중국 화웨이와 반도체 파운드리 SMIC가 미국의 기술 수출 규제에도 불구하고 칩 제조 기술에서 의미 있는 진전을 이뤘다는 분석이 나왔다.
블룸버그는 리서치 업체 테크인사이츠의 보고서를 인용해,플레이앤고화웨이의 최신 스마트폰에 탑재된 칩 분석 결과를 현지시간 12일 보도했다. 화웨이 메이트 80 시리즈에 탑재되는 기린(Kirin) 9030.(사진=테크인사이츠) 
보고서에 따르면 화웨이 스마트폰 메이트 80 프로 맥스에 탑재된 프로세서 기린(Kirin) 9030은 SMIC의 기존 공정을 개선한 기술로 생산됐다.
테크인사이츠는 해당 칩이 "현재까지 중국 내에서 달성한 가장 진보된 반도체 제조 사례"라고 평가했다.그러면서 "새 칩은 SMIC가 이전 세대 대비 점진적이지만 의미 있는 수준의 미세화를 달성했음을 보여준다"고 분석했다.
화웨이와 SMIC는 모두 미국의 수출 통제 대상 기업이다.미국 정부는 두 회사를 중국 군사 조직과의 연계를 이유로 '엔티티 리스트(Entity List)'에 올리고,플레이앤고첨단 반도체 장비와 기술 접근을 제한해 왔다.
반도체 제조 공정이 개선되면 칩 성능은 높아지고 제조 단가는 낮아진다.다만 중국 기업들은 핵심 장비 접근에서 여전히 제약을 받고 있다.어플라이드 머티어리얼스와 ASML 등 주요 장비 업체들은 중국 기업에 최첨단 장비를 공급하지 못하도록 규제받고 있다.
보고서는 SMIC의 기술력이 아직 TSMC나 삼성전자와 같은 글로벌 선두 업체 수준에는 미치지 못한다고 지적했다.생산 수율이 낮고 제조 비용이 높을 가능성도 언급됐다.
현재 SMIC는 기존 7nm(나노미터,플레이앤고10억분의 1m) 공정을 개선한 이른바‘N+3’공정을 활용해 기린 9030을 생산하고 있다.이는 경쟁사들이 양산 중인 5나노 공정과 비교하면 기술적으로 뒤처진 수준이다.
테크인사이츠는 "절대적인 기준에서 N+3 공정은 TSMC와 삼성전자의 5나노 공정에 비해 미세화 수준이 상당히 낮다"고 평가했다.
