스웨덴 룬드대 에밀리 소네스테트 박사팀은 스웨덴 말뫼 식이 및 암 코호트에 참가한 평균 58.1세 2만7670명을 대상으로 유제품 섭취와 치매 위험 간 관계를 25년간 추적 관찰했다.연구팀은 7일간 식사일지와 면담 등을 통해 섭취 유제품 종류와 양 등을 측정하고,12월경마일정25년간 치매 발생 여부를 조사했다.추적 기간에 3208명이 치매 진단을 받았다.
연구 결과,12월경마일정고지방 치즈를 하루 50% 이상 먹은 사람은 하루 15g 미만을 섭취한 사람보다 치매 위험이 13% 낮았다.고지방 치즈와 알츠하이머병 간 연관성에는 치매 위험 변이유전자(ApoE-e4)가 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.또 고지방 크림을 하루에 20g 이상 섭취한 사람은 전혀 먹지 않은 사람에 비해 치매 위험이 16% 낮았다.치매 유형별 분석에서는 고지방 치즈를 많이 섭취할 경우 혈관성 치매 위험이 29% 낮았고,고지방 크림도 알츠하이머병과 혈관성 치매 위험 모두와 역의 연관성을 보였다.그러나 저지방 치즈·크림,고·저지방 우유,버터,12월경마일정요거트·버터밀크 등 발효유 섭취와 치매 위험 사이에서는 연관성이 관찰되지 않았다.
연구 저자 에밀리 소네스테트 박사는 “때로는 치즈가 건강에 좋지 않은 음식으로 분류되기도 했지만,이 연구는 일부 고지방 유제품이 치매 위험을 낮출 수 있음을 보여준다”며 “고지방 유제품의 뇌 보호 효과를 정확히 규명하기 위해서는 추가 연구가 필요하다”고 말했다.
이 연구는 미국신경학회저널‘신경학(Neurology)’에 최근 게재됐다.
