특검은 17일 언론 공지를 통해 “오늘 오전‘김건희씨 로저비비에 가방 수수 의혹 사건’과 관련해 김 의원 주거지에 대한 압수수색에 착수했다”고 밝혔다.
압수수색영장에는 김 의원이 배우자 이모씨의 청탁금지법 위반 혐의 공범으로 적시된 것으로 전해졌다.
이씨는 지난 2023년 3월 국민의힘 당 대표 선거에서 김 의원이 당선된 후 김씨에게 시가 260만원 상당 로저비비에 클러치백을 전달한 혐의를 받는다.
지난달 6일 윤 전 대통령 부부 자택 압수수색 과정에서 이 클러치백과 함께 이씨가 쓴 감사 편지가 발견되기도 했다.
특검은 김씨가 건진법사 전성배씨와 공모해 통일교 신도 2400여명을 입당시켜 김 의원을 당 대표로 밀었고,그 대가로 통일교 측에 정부 차원의 지원을 약속했다고 보고 있다.
이에 이씨가 선거 지원에 대한 답례 차원에서 김씨에게 로저비비에 클러치백을 줬을 가능성을 들여다보고 있다.
김 의원은 배우자가 김씨에게 선물한 사실을 인정하면서도 “신임 여당 대표의 배우자로서 대통령 부인에게 사회적 예의 차원에서 선물한 것”이라며 부정 청탁은 없었다고 주장해왔다.
