들끓는 민심,강원랜드 6 만원수습될지 미지수 쿠팡이 지난 28일 창업자인 김범석 쿠팡Inc.이사회 의장(사진)의 사과발표 이후 이튿날 1조7000억원에 육박하는 대규모 보상안을 내놓는 등 개인정보 유출사태 수습에 나섰지만 여론이 바뀔진 미지수다.
29일 정치권에 따르면 김 의장은 30일과 31일 열리는 국회 연석청문회에 불출석사유서를 제출했다.국회 6개 상임위원회가 합동으로 여는 청문회지만 김 의장이 불출석할 경우 '맹탕'으로 끝날 가능성도 있다.지난 17일 진행된 청문회에도 해럴드 로저스 한국 쿠팡 임시대표가 출석해 의례적 인사말과 원론적 답변으로 일관해 청문회를 사실상 무력화했다. 쿠팡이 국회에서 열리는 정보유출 사태 연석 청문회를 하루 앞두고 개인 정보 유출 통지를 받은 모든 고객을 대상으로 선제적 보상안을 발표했다.쿠팡은 개인정보 유출 통지를 받은 3370만 명 고객 전원에게 1조 6850억 원 규모,강원랜드 6 만원1인당 5만 원 상당의 고객 보상안을 시행할 계획이라고 29일 밝혔다.다만 현금성 보상이 아닌 구매이용권으로 지급되는 만큼 생색내기용이라는 비판도 제기된다.사진은 이날 서울 송파구 쿠팡 본사의 모습./사진=뉴스1 
청문회에 앞서 진행된 사과와 보상안이 책임 있는 수습보다 여론전 성격이 짙다는 평가가 나오는 이유다.국회는 총괄책임자인 김 의장의 청문회 출석이 우선해야 한다는 입장이다.여당인 더불어민주당은 청문회를 하고 나서 미진하다고 판단되면 국정조사를 추진할 방침이다.앞서 김 의장은 지난 28일 이번 개인정보 유출사태 이후 처음으로 "고객 여러분께 깊이 사과드린다"고 밝혔다.연석청문회를 앞두고 창업자의 사과와 보상안 발표로 사태수습에 나섰지만 민심은 아직 냉랭하다.
김 의장은 사과문에서 외부유포는 없었고 정부와 협력한 조사발표라는 기존 입장을 되풀이해 정부와의 진실공방에 불을 붙였다.경찰 수사가 진행 중인 상황에서도 "실제 저장된 정보는 3000여건에 불과하고 외부유출은 없었다"는 자체조사 결과도 되풀이했다.
일각에선 쿠팡이 자체조사 결과를 서둘러 발표하고 사과문에서조차 3000건의 정보유출을 강조한 게 사인을 축소하고 보상액도 줄이려는 것 아니냐는 의혹까지 일었다.이날 쿠팡이 3370만명을 대상으로 보상을 진행한다고 발표하면서 보상액 축소 의혹은 해소됐지만 보상방식을 두고도 논란이 나와서다.
업계 관계자는 "쿠팡의 보상안과 김 의장의 사과가 나온 상황인데 국회의 연석청문회 내용과 결과 등에 따라 쿠팡에 대한 여론의 향방이 달렸다고 생각한다"고 말했다.
