관세 시행 앞두고 확보한 재고 효과 사라져앤디 제시 아마존 최고경영자(CEO)가 최근 아마존 일부 상품 가격이 오른 배경으로 도널드 트럼프 대통령의 광범위한 관세 정책을 지목했다.
21일(현지시간) 제시 CEO는 스위스 다보스에서 열린 세계경제포럼(WEF) 연례회의 현장에서 CNBC와의 인터뷰를 통해 “다른 소매업체들과 마찬가지로 아마존과 방대한 제3자 판매자 네트워크는 지난해 봄 트럼프 대통령의 관세 시행을 앞두고 재고를 대거 확보했다”고 말했다.
그러나 이 같은 재고가 가을 무렵 소진되기 시작하면서 가격에 관세 영향이 반영되기 시작했다는 설명이다. 아마존 (사진=픽사베이) 
제시 CEO는 “일부 상품과 가격에서 관세 영향이 서서히 드러나기 시작했다”며 “일부 판매자들은 높아진 비용을 소비자 가격에 전가하고 있고,완다 카지노또 다른 판매자들은 수요 유지를 위해 비용을 자체적으로 흡수하고 있으며,그 중간 선택을 하는 경우도 있다”고 말했다.
이어 “소비자에게 가능한 한 낮은 가격을 제공하기 위해 판매 파트너들과 협력할 수 있는 모든 방법을 모색하고 있다”면서도 “선택지에는 분명한 한계가 있다”고 말했다.
이번 발언은 지난해 6월 제시 CEO가 CNBC 인터뷰에서 “가격이 눈에 띄게 오르지 않았다”고 언급했던 것과는 대비된다.
당시 아마존은 관세가 상품 가격에 미치는 영향을 표시하는 방안을 검토하고 있다는 보도가 나오며 트럼프 대통령과 행정부로부터 직접적인 비판을 받았었다.
이후 트럼프 대통령이 제프 베이조스 아마존 창업자와 통화한 뒤,완다 카지노아마존 대변인은 CNN에 “본사 아마존 사이트에서 관세 영향을 표시하는 방안은 전혀 검토된 바 없다”며 “해당 논의는 30달러 이하 상품을 판매하는 스핀오프 사이트‘하울(Haul)’일부 제품에 한정된 것”이라고 설명했다.
