두산에너빌리티(034020)가 미국의 소형모듈원전(SMR) 개발사인 엑스에너지의 SMR 주기기 제작 준비에 돌입한다.
두산에너빌리티는 11일 미국 워싱턴DC에서 엑스에너지와 SMR 핵심 소재에 대한 예약 계약을 체결했다고 12일 밝혔다.
이번 계약은 엑스에너지가 만들 SMR‘Xe-100’16대의 핵심 소재인 두산에너빌리티의 단조품(Forging)을 선제 확보하는 차원에서 이뤄졌다.단조품은 SMR 주기기 제작에 필요한 중·대형 소재로 생산에 오랜 시간이 걸린다.이에 두산에너빌리티는 이번 예약 계약 이후 엑스에너지와 후속 계약을 통해 단조품 및 모듈 제작에 신속히 착수할 예정이다.
엑스에너지는 미국 에너지부(DOE)의 지원을 받는 차세대 고온가스로 SMR 개발사다.물을 냉각재로 사용하는 기존 경수로와 달리 헬륨 가스를 냉각재로 사용하는 Xe-100 원자로 건설을 추진하고 있다.엑스에너지는 첫 SMR 사업으로 미국 화학 기업 다우의 텍사스주 산업단지에 4대의 Xe-100을 공급할 계획이다.
또 워싱턴주의 공공 전력 공급 기업인 에너지노스웨스트에 12대의 Xe-100을 공급한다.에너지노스웨스트와 엑스에너지는 세계 1위 클라우드 서비스 기업인 아마존웹서비스(AWS)와 함께 인공지능(AI) 데이터센터 구동에 필요한 전력을 확보하기 위해 2039년까지 총 5GW(기가와트) 규모,국내 온라인카지노Xe-100 60대 건설 사업을 추진하고 있다.
두산에너빌리티는 2021년 엑스에너지와 SMR 주기기 제작을 위한 설계 용역을 맺었고 2023년에는 엑스에너지의 지분 투자에 참여하며 파트너십을 강화했다.올 8월에는 두산에너빌리티와 엑스에너지·AWS·한국수력원자력이 SMR 사업 협력을 위한 4자 간 업무협약(MOU)을 맺었다.
아울러 두산에너빌리티는 내년 1분기에 경남 창원에 SMR 전용 공장을 착공해 2030년 60기의 SMR 주기기 공급을 목표로 선제적인 생산능력 확보에 나설 예정이다.
