[디지털데일리 백지영기자] 올해 1월 스페이스X의 초대형 로켓 '스타십(Starship)' 폭발이 당시 상공을 운항 중이던 민간 항공기에 상당한 위험을 초래했던 것으로 뒤늦게 드러났다.

21일 월스트리스저널(WSJ)은 미 연방항공청(FAA) 내부 문건을 인용해 폭발 직후 약 50분간 로켓 파편이 카리브해 일대로 떨어졌고 이 과정에서 항공기 3대가 연료 부족 문제로 위험 지역을 통과하거나 비상상황을 선언한 것으로 확인됐다고 보도했다.

제트블루와 이베리아항공 등 총 450여명이 탑승한 항공기 3대는 실제 파편 낙하 구역 인근을 지나면서 FAA 내부에서도 "극도의 안전 위험"이라는 경고까지 나왔다.관제사들은 항공기들을 급히 우회시키느라 업무가 과부하되며 일시적으로 항공기 간 과근접 상황까지 발생했다.

또 문건에는 스페이스X가 폭발 직후 즉각적으로 FAA 비상 핫라인에 신고하지 않았다는 내용도 포함됐다.일부 관제사들은 먼저 조종사들의 '파편 목격' 제보로 폭발 사실을 파악한 것으로 나타났다.

스페이스X는 관련 보도에 대해 "어떤 항공기도 위험에 빠진 적 없다"며 WSJ 보도를 반박한 것으로 전해졌다.또 FAA와 협조해 실시간 공역 정보 공유 등 개선을 추진 중이라고 강조했다.
